👋 Hi Reader,

Before you start hating on me that LinkedIn Newsletters are the very reason email newsletters should exist and all that, hear me out.

Look, I am totally on your side. A social network building a newsletter continues making the walled garden longer. You cannot take your subscriber list out (not easily anyway), and you always live in existential threat of getting kicked out the platform, one fine day.

But what if there is a silver lining? Let’s find out:

Who would LinkedIn Newsletters Benefit?

If you started your career and your social media presence at the same time, it’s likely your network reach has grown along with you. In the interest of tapping into a familiar group, LinkedIn newsletters allow you to reach professionals who anyway engage with your social content, and allows you to stay visible to them through subscription-based notifications.

They are powerful for sharing your notes with people inherently in-network and then build a warmer intro to their connections as well.

Plus the subscribers interested in your niche are all within the same network, so deliverability of your newsletter is guaranteed.

Having said that…

LinkedIn is indeed a walled garden.

  • It keeps subscriber data to itself and does not allow exporting emails.

  • Links are downranked, reducing off-platform traffic.

  • LinkedIn Analytics are basic and are not suited for segmentation

So how do you move out of LinkedIn with your subscriber list? If that sounds like an Ocean’s Eleven-level heist, read on.

How to Move LinkedIn Newsletter Subs Off-Platform in 5 Steps

Grow the network using the 'Invite Connections' featureWhen publishing an issue, click invite. You can get hundreds of subscribers in a day within the LI limit. LinkedIn provides best practices here.

Engage immediately after publishingRespond to comments and DMs straight away to trigger engagement signals in LinkedIn’s algorithm.

Include CTAs for exclusive contentOffer bonus guides or mini-courses that require subscribing via your own email form. Place these CTAs in the newsletter or comments. Yes reach would go down, but we built in safeguards for it in Step 1 to keep growing our list, remember?Send LinkedIn DMs to your bestiesReach out to engaged readers via LinkedIn DM with a link to your own email list. Drop them a nice referral gift as a note of gratitude for jumping the fence.Use LinkedIn outreach export toolsThis might seem like a Hail-Mary step. But if the DMing thing is not viable for you, because you have 50,000 subscribers (you are flexing, I can see that), there are several Chrome extensions and tools (like Subscribers Export for LinkedIn) which can export your newsletter subscribers off of LinkedIn.

Some also allow you to enrich the list with email contact info. We haven’t tested it out (we are not LinkedIn celebs, not yet), but let us know if this has worked out for you before.

Rinse and Repeat, as you keep adding followers on LinkedIn.

That's all, folks!
