👋 Hi Reader,
If you are thinking about buying out a newsletter for acquiring their audience and are on the fence on how to implement this, let us know. We have been talking to several newsletter operators about this exact way of operation, so would like to know your most pressing concerns too. Let us know by hitting Reply.
I am a Pulp Fiction fan. Like me, if that’s where you heard the Spanish expression ‘Mi casa es tu casa’ meaning ‘My house is your house’, then consider yourself in my inner circle.
But I digress. Today I would like to talk about the whole gamut of activities that goes into giving acquired audiences a new house.
A lot of tenured newsletter operators I talk to do one thing that smaller operators usually do not think about: they are on the lookout for smaller niche newsletters who serve an exact or adjacent audience as their own. And when their timing and due diligence is right, they swoop in and make an offer to buy them out and give the acquired email list a new home.
That's it.
Sounds easy-peasy? Hardly. Integrating two disparate email lists is a humongous process, much like an organ transplant. And if the acquired audience decides to revolt against this operation, the whole intent of buying the audience gets defeated.
I get it. I have seen a lot of newsletter operators not decide to acquire smaller newsletters, despite having the money and the ambition for it. So I decided to do something about it: talking to other experienced newsletter operators who have done it successfully on both ends - acquiring and getting acquired.
Seb Lindner talked about it on Episode 1 of the LetterStack Podcast.
But he isn’t the only one. I have more people sharing their experiences, so I am distilling their wisdom into a ‘How-to’ guide of sorts.
